The amazing world of Gumball-development

Cleaning my files, I found some early development sketches from back in 2007-2008, when I was helping developing this amazing show with Mr. Bocquelet and the development studio team. I also did some storyboard on the pilot, but couldn't find any of it. I thought it'd be interesting for the fans out there.

Some early Gumball doodles:

When Gumball almost became a black cat.
Some Miss Simian.

When Richard was thought of as a blue dog:

Hereafter are character ideas and concepts from different styles that could live in Gumball's world. Ben then chose his favourites. Some made it into the show some where left over. I'm giving them some public time here, so they don't remain forgot.

This guy actually made it in the show, as an office worker.
The original drawing of what became Principal Brown. Yes, Purple...don't ask why.

Some more CN development posts to come soon, people!

Fragie et la tache pixel sont vraiment géniales! Y'a pas moyen de faire les yeux doux à m'sieur Bocquelet pour qu'il les case furtivement dans un épisode? =)

AWESOME! SO nice to see those explorations.
The first time I saw Gumball was when soi animated the pilot and he was already very close to what he looked in the final series, at least from what I remember.
These are so cool!!

Yeah, some of the doodles (with the steak) where for the mini test. I remember giving posing notes with Ben on that too. But believe me, Gumball design was quite different then! And Darwin was in 3D..

Yes, I remember the steak scene!
Yeah I guess Gumball must have looked a lot different in that test from what he looks like today.
My perception tricked me there... :)
I also love those loose Post-It drawings of Richard!

Sorry Anonymous, I couldn't find all I did, as some folder were archived. But I didn't do much on Nicole anyway.

But could you maybe tell us how what her Original concept was?

Polyminthe said...

Ok! Well at the very beginning she was a working mom always absent, so we wouldn't see her. Then when she got a bigger role, she was instantly a blue cat. But if you're really curious, here's a secret: Gumball was a blue dog at one point (which explains Richard as a dog too). I must have a picture somewhere, I'll look for it.

I like black cat Gumball. It where ok if they leaved him black, but I think blue looks a little better for his charachter

The box teacher looks like a canadian from South Park.

The early blue cat version of Gumball and everyone else should have been on the show currently today.
